PREMIER BOUCHARD WHY THIS MÉTIS NATION OF CANADA CREATED ?

What is going on with the Métis Movement in Canada ?

Who is this newly created Métis Nation of Canada under its Prime Minister, David Bouchard ? Why the need to create another Métis national organization when we already have one Métis Nation in Canada under the direction of the Métis National Council ? Another new national organization supported by a web site who focus exclusively on prairies base Métis historical recognition.

Every Métis in Canada recognize the Métis National Council (MNC) as the sole representative of the Métis Nation regardless of the narrow visions some of it current leaders attempt to promote and protect under a segregated restrictive exclusive territorial definition.

So what ? Is this a reason to create a parallel new Métis Nation? No and No. I do not see some Cree, Huron or Ojibway created a new nation because they encounter difficulties with their leadership and their vision? Ya, lets create a new Canadian Nation because we do not like the one Harper is proposing ?

Something is wrong completely wrong when people are doing this kind of action to divide our efforts, our actions and our aspiration of seeing the Métis Nation in Canada to evolve in recognition of the new Métis reality and its true history. It takes time and dedication from the Métis people to eventually arrive at a unified Métis consensus and a strong Métis Nation in Canada.

The Métis not recognized by the MNC must therefore work harder to demonstrate to the MNC leadership that they could be wrong and that their vision does not encompass the contemporary Métis reality. A new Métis is born every day from marriage of Canadian and Aboriginal people being First Nation Métis and Inuit across Canada. These Métis will have also one day a 7 generation to protect .

If some of the current leadership of the MNC does not want to recognized the eastern Métis they must have a historical reason for that. Where were the Métis of eastern Canada when the western Métis left the Congress of Aboriginal People (CAP) in the mid 1980 ? They stay with the Congress rather than to join the MNC then. But we should also remember It was not necessarily the Métis fault as they were amalgamated with the non Status Indian who mostly controlled CAP. Tony Belcourt who eventually established the Métis Nation Ontario was then the President of OMAA and stay also behind with CAP temporary.

But tired of not being listen to ,and never seeing a Métis agenda within this organization, Métis of CAP attempted to protest this situation by forming an administrative Métis Confederacy within CAP to be able to put forward a Métis agenda at one of their annual assembly. When The Métis did this the leadership of CAP taught what was left of the Métis would break away again. They were right they eventually did and unified as the Other Métis.

But since the Métis of Québec left CAP and organized themselves in the early 1990s under a Métis Nation in Québec . It is a question of time the Métis in New Brunswick and in Nova Scotia will follow the same path and do the same.

Later ,Tony Belcourt a Métis from St-Anne Alberta and an ex president of OMAA organized the Métis Nation Ontario by using only English as their operational language and succeeded, with tremendous efforts and opposition from some MNC leaders, to be invited to join the Métis National Council in mid 1990 . The Métis Nation of British Columbia mainly formed with Métis of the Prairie provinces and using only English as their operational language succeeded also to be invited to join the Métis National Council in the early 2000s.

The Métis Nation in Québec is now in a position to demonstrate and educate the Métis National Council leadership on who we are and how our Québec Metis family clans are strongly connected with the Métis familly clans of the pariries not as french but as Métis. Contary to the MNC and its provincial affiliates, the Québec Métis Nation use French and French Michif as its operational language and also offer service in English.

Now why create a new National Métis organization when the Métis Nation Québec is getting so close to be part of this new vision an new understanding of who the Métis are all across Canada proposed by some leaders of provincial affiliated members of the the MNC, and to potentially have the opportunity to open some mind and the door for the other eastern provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island t o also berrecognized?

As an ex-leader and organizer of the Métis Nation Québec I never give up to petition the Métis National Council for the Métis Nation Québec to join the rank of the MNC regardless of their constant refusal.

There is now great hope as new leadership are coming within the rank of the MNC with new inclusive vision. They have learned from our constant pressure and eastern Métis education the important role the Métis of Eastern Canada play in the formation of the Métis Nation in the prairies and across Canada .

The Métis Nation Québec is currently working on new avenues. The leadership of the Métis Nation Québec met with Mr. Robert Doucette President of the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan, to explore the ties of their cultural connection and to work on new avenues for bringing the Métis Nation Québec into the Métis National Council. The Métis National Council is still considered by most Métis as the only Métis Nation in Canada.

The Métis Nation Québec is supportive of an inclusive national Métis Registry with strong Métis critéria based on strong familly clans and cultural continuity rather than blood quantum as imposed to First Nations by the Canadian government under the indian Act.

According to this newly national Métis Nation of Canada, and from their membership form that can be downloaded from their web site, their leadership thinks that being Métis can only be recognized by being of mixed European and First Nation ancestry. If this is the people they are trying to reach, this would classified 50% of First Nation in Canada and probably 20% of Canadian as being illegible to be Métis . Being a Métis and part of the Métis Nation is a lot more than that. Our Métis identity is based on social, political, cultural, and spiritual continuity not as English or French canadian Métis of mixted ancestry but as Aboriginal people recognized under section 35 of the Canadian constitution.

I do see the MNC to represent Metis in our Eastern provinces, Métis in the far north, Métis from below the 49th and Métis in USA. It is up to these Métis to demonstrate their strength in continuing to petition the Métis National Council for recognition rather than to start and join a parallel national organization to divide our forces.

The Métis who have been involved in the Metis movement with their Métis familly clans for long do recognize there is only one Métis Nation in Canada with its difficulties and its problems but in constant evolution. There was no need to create a new parallel Métis national organization under the name of the Métis Nation of Canada .

Mr David Bouchard now Prime Minister of the Métis Nation of Canada is the Ex President of the Métis Nation of Greater Victoria recognized by the Métis Nation of British Columbia as the local for their Capital Regional District and a full member of the Métis Nation of British Columbia affiliated with the MNC .

Mr Bouchard missed an opportunity to really increase the chance to unified the Métis movement and the Métis People of Canada within the MNC but will find eventually himself in confrontation and conflict of interest with the MNC leadership.

By creating this new Métis Nation of Canada, the organizers of this new Métis national organization are demonstrating their lack of understanding of the Métis movement and increasing the confusion and the division among the objectives of building one strong Métis Nation in Canada.

Mr Bouchard had a great opportunity to increase the chance to unified the Métis movement and the Métis People of Canada under one Métis Nation already establish and as envisioned by our Métis ancestors in eastern and then western Canada.

No I can not and will never support these divisive actions undertaken sometime by good intentioned Métis people who do not see the destructive political effects it can have if it is eventually financially supported by the Canadian government to increase a division among the power base of the Métis People, like they did with CAP to attempt to divide the power base of the Assembly of First Nations.

To me It would have been more effective for Mr. Bouchard now new Prime Minister of the Métis Nation of Canada to rather seek the Leadership of the Métis Nation of British Columbia and have the opportunity to lobby the other provincial MNC leaders by proposing recognition of the Métis from provinces or territory not recognized by the MNC.

A great lost of Métis talent and a great lost of Métis energy.
