WHO IS THE MÉTIS POPULATION IN THE PROVINCE OF QUÉBEC

The Métis population in the province of Québec is comprised of all the ones that identify as Métis, according to the community based citizenship code for the Métis Nation in the province of Québec.

We are the material and spiritual products of the meeting of two worlds, of two individuals with love, that were forced to run away from the abuse of the political ties between one or the other Nations of ours ancestors.

For the last 500 years, we only lived in North America, and we created our own communities in respect of our own social reality based on our own culture.

Administratively, the Indian Act is not and will never be the law that will govern the citizenship of the Métis Nation in the province of Québec, the same way the Indian Act govern the membership of First Nations Indian bands. The Métis Nation in Québec is distinct and equal to the other First Nations. The Métis people of Québec consider the Métis Nation as the 12th aboriginal Nation in the province of Québec.

Culturally and traditionally, we are at the centre of the medicine wheel of th four color of the people according to the philosophy taught by the Elders.

Politicly we are recognised by the Canadian Constitution and we are part as a Nation, to the spiritual Confederacy of all the First Nations in North America ( Turtle Island).

We the Métis in the province of Québec are not part of by deprivation of citizenship, to neither one of our Nation of origin. We only belong to the Métis Nation, our only Nation.

OUR POLITICAL ASPIRATIONS

Now that the Canadian Constitution recognised and confirmed all treaty and aboriginal rights, including the one of the Métis, it is desirable that Canada, Québec the other provinces and the First Nation consent to recognize the contribution of the Métis people of Québec and the role they played in the development of the Canadian Confederation, Québec and the other provinces by respecting them as one Nation of People.

We should never forget that the history of all Métis claims in Lower Canada, in Québec , New-Brunswick, Nova Scotia Labrador and Prince Edward Island established the way of thinking and maintained the political philosophy of the Métis people of the west to whom the Métis of the east already hold through the Métis family such as the Riel, the Dumont, the Morin, the Bohnet, the Desmeules the Rivard the Bourque and many other to numerous to mentioned.

When these families, already impregnated by their Métis identity, left Lower Canada for the promise land for the Métis people and well orchestrated by Louis Riel, this promise land was a territory accessible for all the Métis, away from the political control and the restraints that the Métis were experiencing in Lower Canada. Regardless and still today the Métis are still in existance in the eastern provinces and growing in number because no one will ever be able to stop mixte mariage between Member of First Nations and other Nations, between Métis or to try to controled the deep felling of people to whom they identified as Métis in respect of who they are and from who they are.

OUR PROPOSITION

The Métis Nation in the Province of Québec in unity with the participation of all the Métis in Canada , want to propose to the Canadian Government an acceptable agreement to establish our roles and obligations toward everyone, the Métis Nation of Canada, the First Nations, the Inuit, the Canadians and the Québécois.

The population of the Métis Nation in the Province of Québec, as much as any other one in Canada, is ready to start negotiations in good faith, to implement its rights to self-government, including its jurisdiction on its economic, social ,political, spiritual and cultural developments, its fiscal arrangements, the management of its land and resources, its financial resources needed for the negotiation, delegation of cost for its government institutions, programs and services, transfer of payment, protection of all its existing engagements, and the legal obligation between all the Métis and Canada.
